The author Joan Trumpauer Mulholland came to visit Siwanoy School on May 10th. Joan Mulholland has a pretty cool background. Joan is a civil rights activist. She stood up for what she believed in, even if that meant she would have to be put in jail which she was. In 1961, Jackson, Mississippi, Joan was arrested. But, through all the struggles, Joan still persisted. She only spent a few months in jail. Fourth and fifth graders piled into the Imagination Station. As the students settled down, Joan Mulholland showed the children a video about what it was like for people with a different skin color. After the video finished, Joan talked a little about racial discrimination. Then Joan read a book her son, Loki, wrote for her. When Joan finished the book, she put on another video about a sit-in. She was very brave and it was very interesting!
